What kind of Printer should you opt for?

By: Gen Federico

Buying a new printer can feel like another one of those difficult techie decisions, for example, do you opt for a high-end device and expect high-print quality and durability, or do you opt for a cheaper device and expect poor print quality; well unfortunately its not as simple as that, and choosing the right printer will depend exactly on what you want to use it for, which could mean that a cheap device is exactly what you need!

For a household printer, you will essentially have two options: a laser printer or an inkjet printer, which are different enough to warrant careful consideration; briefly, an inkjet prints by emitting tiny droplets of ink, whereas a laser uses toner cartridges that are fused onto the page with lasers. Whilst it is true that both these mechanisms offer similar results, a laser or an inkjet printer will offer different resolutions – basically a laser printer, on close inspection will have a higher resolution.

This means that if high quality is what you want then you should opt for a laser printer, as it will not only print in a higher resolution, but it will also maintain its quality more consistently than ink cartridges; not only that but a laser printer, if you are printing in large volumes, will need its toner replaced less often that you would replace ink cartridges.

Sounds good? – well its not the whole story, and there is a reason why inkjet printers are the most common printer for household applications; firstly they are cheaper to buy, and many “budget” models can offer good quality at low prices; secondly their ink cartridges are fairly ubiquitous and can even be refilled and lastly for occasional to fairly often printing they will do the job just fine, which means that for household applications investing in a laser printer may not be cost effective.
